Does velvet can be washed?

Does velvet can be washed? It is one of the questions you think about, if you have in your wardrobe clothes made of this material. Well, yes, unlike other materials that require chemical cleaning, there are also velvet garments that can be washed at home, either manually or automatically. To find out the maintenance recommendations for this material, first check which velvet variant it is!

Types of velvet

Before moving on to the velvet clothes cleaning tips at home, it is important to know that there are several types of fabrics from which this can be obtained. Thus, silk velvet dominates the luxurious area of the spectrum and, as a rule, requires chemical cleaning in a professional laundry. This is also the case with silk blouses that have various applications or ornaments. Instead, cotton velvet, which is usually made of blends of polyester and rayon fabric, can be washed by hand.

1. Synthetic fiber velvet

Synthetic velvet is easier to clean than other types of velvet. In addition, it can be cleaned in the washing machine – even if we are talking about velvet dresses – in a delicate washing cycle. Whatever you decide to clean it, use a small amount of detergent (at most a teaspoon). If you wash a synthetic velvet coat by hand, rinse it well at the end to remove excess foam.

Like any other synthetic material, synthetic velvet can have a chemical, pungent, vinegared odor.

2. Cotton velvet

Cotton velvet is a type of velvet with a high content of natural cotton fiber. The main characteristics that place it among the preferred materials in the textile industry are: discreet luster, different from the velvet variants made of polyamide or polyester, the pleasant sensation it offers to the touch, as well as the fineness of the material. In addition, unlike other types of velvet, cotton allows a higher breathability of the skin, so it eliminates the possibility of the formation of unpleasant odors, specific to certain types of synthetic fibers.

   2.1 Disadvantages of cotton velvet

Cotton velvet is very fluffy, eliminating fluff even during manufacture. They remain attached even between the seams. Fortunately, the loose fluff resulting from the manufacturing processes of the material is removed by washing, under the action of the detergent used, but also by the rotational movements of the machine. However, at the first wash you will notice small lumps of down concentrated on the surface of the respective clothes; do not worry, however, because they can be removed quickly with a roll of adhesive paper.

2.2 How to wash cotton velvet

It is recommended that cotton velvet textiles be washed by hand. However, when you choose to clean them using the automatic washing machine, choose the washing program for delicate clothes (manual washing).

2.3 How to wash cotton velvet in the washing machine

Here are the rules to keep in mind before pressing the “Start” button on your car, when there are cotton velvet clothes in the tub:

  • Pay attention to the degree of loading of the washing machine tub! It is best to reduce the tank load by half. Usually, programs for delicate items require a maximum load of 2-2.5 kg. In this way, you will protect the fabrics. It can also be very helpful to consult the instruction manual of your washing machine.
  • Before washing your cotton velvet clothes, turn them upside down.
  • The squeezing cycle must not exceed 400 rpm.

2.4 How to wash cotton velvet by hand

If you opt for manual washing of cotton velvet textiles, use lukewarm water in which you have previously diluted a little detergent. Do not rub the material so as not to damage the fabric.

2.5 How to properly dry cotton velvet clothes

Do you use an electronic tumble dryer to dry your velvet clothes? Choose the program for delicate laundry, with an alternative air flow (hot-cold) and a low temperature. Another option is to dry the clothes in the classic way, but our recommendation is to leave them to dry on a flat surface. Drying on the hanger is not indicated for cotton velvet items, taking into account that small (often irreparable) deformations of the material may occur.

3. Silk velvet

As you already know, velvet is a type of fabric obtained from tufts in which the cut threads are evenly distributed and have a short density (a feature that also gives the specific fineness of the material). As for silk velvet, most of it is actually made of a mixture of rayon and silk.

3.1 How to wash silk velvet

However, to protect the fabric, there are some basic rules:

  • Manual washing is the most recommended method of cleaning velvet textiles, even if the instructions on their label also allow machine washing.
  • Use a clean container in which you add lukewarm water.
  • Use a mild laundry detergent or even a baby shampoo.
  • Using your hands, immerse the garment completely in detergent water.
  • With circular movements, “walk” the velvet product through the water, so that the soap acts in the depth of the fabric.
  • Clean the coat also in lukewarm water, by immersion, until the foam on the material is removed.
  • Eliminate excess water by gently tapping with a towel.
  • Avoid using chlorine on silk clothes.

3.2 How to remove stains from silk velvet

If you have to fight the stains on the silk velvet, prepare a mixture of 2 tablespoons of vinegar (in its absence you can also use lemon juice or ammonia) and 2 cups of water. Using a sprayer, apply the solution thus obtained on the stains, then rinse.

No matter how you choose to wash velvet textiles, automatic drying is not a solution for this material. The process should take place at room temperature, away from direct sunlight, on the hanger.

3.3 How to iron silk velvet clothes

Although ironing them is not exactly indicated, there are cases in which the silk velvet must be smoothed. You can do this at home by placing the article we are talking about under a canvas. Basically, the soleplate of the iron will pass over the cloth and not directly on the velvet. Before ironing, turn the garment upside down and set an ironing program for the delicate fabrics (the “Silk” option).

The velvet resurfaced

The resurfaced velvet is not, in fact, a material, the term referring to a certain structure of the fabric. It can be made of natural or synthetic fibers, but most often it is made of cotton. It can be easily recognized by being thick and quite rigid.

Among the most significant advantages of resurfaced velvet is the fact that it is very warm and resistant. In addition, it quickly absorbs and releases moisture, being among those materials that have the quality of “breathe”.

Maintenance instructions

The resurfaced velvet is used for various textile materials, therefore the maintenance recommendations take into account the fabric. Often, reed velvet is made of cotton, which can be washed and ironed at high temperatures. For difficult stains, you can wipe this material with a damp cloth. It is very important, however, to avoid hard brushing.
